![]() The cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine ready to be connected to the patient. The machine contains a clear fluid until it is connected to the patient's heart. CPB allows surgeons to stop the heart from beating and actually open and operate on the inside of the heart and valves. After repair the heart is closed and when blood flow is returned to the heart it begans to beat again. |
